only girl in the world...

At the moment I am utterly adoring Rihanna's music video for her new single Only Girl (In The World). There is nothing subtle about it.. it's completely pretty in pink! It's totally captivating and girly. Sunsets, glitter, flowers, balloons... my little girl heart flutters over the total gorgeousness of the video and I'm bowled over by the apparent Tim Walker inspirations throughout...

Sara Stockbridge at The Wapping Project..

Vivienne Westwood catwalk, Spring/Summer 2006

A couple of weeks ago, I interviewed the lovely Sara Stockbridge, model and muse to Vivienne Westwood, before her book reading at The Wapping Project. I wanted to talk to her as I am writing a report titled 'Forever in Vogue; Why the World Needs Fashion Icons', and I thought she would be able to give me an insight into the wide word of fashion and icons. I spoke to her extensively, and at the end of the night, she signed my copy of her book. Meeting her was such a pleasure, and she is the most lovely, talkative person....

My first question is during the 1980’s, what made you base your style around Marilyn Monroe and the Queen?

Well I’ve always loved Marilyn Monroe; she’s always been my absolute icon. The queen is Vivienne’s, that’s the Vivienne thing cos she does the crown and the whole royal, that’s where the whole royal element of the look came in. But i always loved Marilyn, and I always loved to be blonde. Simply as that really, I had her on my bedroom wall when I was little.

I suppose she’s a big star in everybody’s eyes.

Yes, yes she is, huge, and it’s a huge look isn’t it, that blonde look. Yeah, love her. Still love her.

How do you think fashion or style icons of today compare to past icons?

I think that’s a really dangerous thing to try and quantify because, you know, everything’s got a gloss on it when you look back. I mean the sixties has all got such a gloss on it now; people like Audrey Hepburn, you just think no one is as fabulous as that. But maybe there is, you know maybe there is, when in future decades when we look back at this it’ll all seem… remember when, I mean you don’t remember cos you weren’t there but in the eighties everyone thought the fashion was shit and you know in the nineties everyone went oh god that was the most boring decade. And now it’s all coming back! And in the eighties I thought the seventies was the most embarrassing decade, and then in the nineties that had a bit of a revival; so I think it’s a little bit like that, I think, I think things are different in retrospect. But having said that, I suppose you must have points where there’s … I don’t know I’m gonna waffle, so I’m not gonna carry on with that question…

Oh, no waffle ahead!

Ok, I’m trying to think of… an obvious fashion icon now is Kate Moss isn’t it. I mean, if you think about it, she’s quite sixties-ish really, she could be any one of those sixties chicks, so in a way I’m trying to think of a more fashion icon now that’s really of now

The one that springs to mind for me personally is people like Alexa Chung.

Yes Alexa Chung. She’s very classy, she’s very classy, she’s got that real regal kind of… It’s like she’s just doing her own thing, it’s not like she’s really copying anything else. Yeah she’s good. You mean fashion icons as in people, public people that are deemed stylish. It’s not really something I really think about a lot to be honest…

The way I see it, it’s difficult to compare people that are such big icons like Marilyn Monroe, like Audrey Hepburn.

{About Marilyn Monroe} See I wouldn’t have her as a fashion icon; I would have had her as just an icon, well a sex icon, I suppose. Just an icon for everybody isn’t she. But then I suppose if you’re a person who likes fashion, that’s how you’re gonna see someone. Gosh, you’re asking me things I’ve never really thought about, it’s quite interesting!

What do you think defines a style icon?

I think it’s something as simple as if enough people pay attention to what they wear and go ‘ooh they’re stylish’, but then actually people seem to say that Lady Gaga’s a style icon, and I just don’t get that at all; I don’t think she’s a style icon, I think she’s a chancer, and she’s just going ‘ohh what shall I wear to get the most attention’, that’s all that’s about. And I think that’ll… she makes me a bit cross actually… that stupid fucking bacon dress, what the fucks that about, its not funny, its not clever, it doesn’t look nice, Christ what do you smell like… and just no, just no , love. And you know what I mean, that the opposite of style icon, I think that’s appalling. And if you’re going to make a statement, make a statement about something, you know, I’m not sure if she is making a statement. I don’t think she is making a statement, cos if you are making a statement it means you have some kind of ideology about something and you’re that pointing across but she’s not she’s just trying to get the most attention she can. My style icon is Sid Vicious actually, one of them, and that sounds preposterous, but if you look at the beautiful simplicity of his outfits… have you seen a film called ‘The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle’?

I’d like to say I have, but I haven’t!

There is this fantastic scene in it where he, it’s the Sex Pistols movie, and there’s a fantastic outfit he wears in it, it’s a white tux and he’s got black spiked up hair, and he’s got a white tux on and black skinny, skinny trousers, and a white ribbon tied round one thigh, and he just looks.. it’s the best outfit ever! I’m trying to think of now whose a style icon… it’s difficult.

Do you think the world needs fashion icons and why?

Ok. Does the world need fashion icons and why? To be honest I don't know if it NEEDS them... but I think fashion icons are like heroes in a way. They're for people to look up to and aspire to maybe... like movie stars. The fashion industry definitely needs them to provide a way of relating a look to the public, to sell clothes. I think the world would be poorer, on a cultural level, without them. I'm thinking of Twiggy - what would the 60's have been without her?

The September Issues...

I have finally got my hands on some beautiful September issues, which I picked up in the airport on my way home from holidaying in Portugal; I got myself British Vogue with Kate Moss on the cover, Deutsch Vogue with Constance Jablonski, and also Harper's Bazaar with Gisele Bündchen. While everybody is going bananas for Camel colour tones, I believe the best of the fashion houses this season are heavily advocating the classic beauty and strength of women, as shown on the catwalks for Chloé, Prada, and most definitely Louis Vuitton. Here is a selection of my favourite editorial photos, each looking very 'lady-like' and feminine.

Ready set for autumn/winter 2010...

The new issue of Elle Collections was released on Friday, and I excitedly went out to get myself a copy. The magazine is any fashionista's guide to what's in vogue for the new season, and although there is no way I could afford any of the beautiful items featured (in particular Chanel, Celine, and Chloe) I do love to marvel and dream...

Florence Welch forever...

Whenever I see pictures of Florence Welch, I always get hair envy. It seems to me like the lady has had every shade of red under the sun, from soft auburn to bold scarlet, and have made a promise to myself that one day I would follow in her gracious footsteps by dying my own wavy locks. Okay, so I am not as daring to go full out crayola red, but this particular tawny shade has really tickled my fancy. Since the release of her debut album 'Lungs' last year (the most beautiful music I own), I have idolised her Pre-Raphaelite looks and her somewhat dark 'English-rose' style. So, to honour Florence, I now cannot wait to pop to my hairdressers!

Tim Walker at The Wapping Project...

Late last evening, I took a trip to the very intriguing area of Wapping to attend a talk with fashion photographer Tim Walker. I have been an devoted admirer of Walker's work since picking up a very special edition of Vogue at a dentist last year (of all places! and yes, I politely asked to keep it). This was Vogue's December 2008 issue, with Kate Moss lounging across the extensive pull out cover in a lavish Dior gown like so;

The editorial, titled 'Tales of the Unexpected' featured the likes of Tim Burton, Helena Bonham-Carter, Karen Elson, and Georgia Jagger among its glossy pages. These images, taking inspiration from Roald Dahl stories, struck a chord in me and has fuelled my imagination ever since, and has left me endlessly searching for new Walker photos.

On the night, Walker spoke extensively about his craft, happily answering questions throughout,whilst his beautiful images were projected on a large screen behind him. He said how he believes fashion photography is 'the only type of photography that allows you to be a fantasist', and I could totally see why. I was also able to meet him personally and he singed my copy of his 'Pictures' book for me, which I will cherish forever! It is a total feast for the eyes and utterly recommendable for any Walker, fashion, or photography fan...

The Monster Ball Tour at The O2 Arena...

Turning up a couple of minutes late, I ran up the tiny steps to my seat finding myself being surrounded by hundreds of other avid Lady Gaga fans who were already rocking out to the sounds of 'Dance in the Dark'. This could only be The Monster Ball Tour, with Lady Gaga, if I haven't made it obvious already.

I heard about the shows when a friend of a friend mentioned the extra London tour dates a couple of months ago, and I knew then that I just had to see this this incredible female live. Saying that, I have seen her perform before, at Take That's The Circus Tour last summer as a support act. Even before that show, I wouldn't consider myself a fan; I firstly found her music much like the factory farmed pop hits that every other female solo act was churning out, and it was only when I saw her sing in the flesh that I came to believed that this Lady was truly one of a kind, and a queen compared to her musical counterparts. I remember running down to my local record shop 'Slipped Discs' the next week to buy her album... I was hooked!

This time round, Gaga has her own stage, support act (Semi Precious Weapons, which I sadly missed) and a brand new dazzling set list, stage concept and of course, fashion! 'Haus of Gaga', her creative team, pulled out all the stops, and my most favourite outfit of the night was 'The Living Dress': an angel-like creation which includes fluttering wings and a headpiece;

..The Living Dress in action..

Also, my favourite songs of the night had to be 'Telephone', with its incredible dance routine as featured in the video with Beyoncé, and her new single 'Alejandro' where she sang whilst frolicking in a fountain of fake blood! Only Lady Gaga could get away with something as ensanguined as this! All in all, the show really was a feast for the eyes, and a total honouring to the fans. I had the most glorious time and loved it when she introduced herself, screaming 'I AM LADY GAGA!'.
Oh, and of course, I bought myself a beautiful program and t-shirt to remember the glorious occasion. In celebration of the Lady, here's her brand new single 'Alejandro'...

Okay, so I'm looking for some new shades for summer, and there's no better (or more reasonably priced) place to go than Accessorize. They really do have a wide selection of sunglasses to suit any style, and here I have picked my four most favourite pairs. Now is a case of choosing a a pair... or a couple :)

Floral print wayfarer £14.00... for ohh-so-summery festival chic
Mink cutaway £15.00.. very Chloé-esque
and finally... Tortoise wayfarers £14.00... classically vintage inspired.

California Guuurls

Dita Von Teese, Katy Perry & Emma Watson - front row Dior, spring 2009

Here is Katy Perry's new track California Gurls... it's a charmer!
I'm a total sucker for good girly summer pop and this is just the ticket. I first heard it on Radio 1 this week on the Scott Mills show and it really brightened my day. This is a definitely going to be on my summer 2010 soundtrack for those sunny days with my girlfriends. Now I can't wait for a follow up album to One of The Boys, as this has already got my ears happy...

Radio 1's Big Weekend...

I finally registered for Radio 1's Big Weekend tickets today. The event is being held in Bangor, Wales (heaven knows how I would get there!) and spans across Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd May. You can only apply for one out of the two days, so I chose Sunday, where some of my favourite artists are playing, such as Vampire Weekend and You Me At Six. Also playing will be Pixie Lott, Biffy Clyro, Ke$ha, Paulo Nutini, Kids In Glass Houses, Paramore and Delphic. I have no idea why I am building my hopes up because the chance of winning tickets is ever so slim, but I can still dream.........

Edit; I unfortunately did not win any
tickets,but I'll still be listening
online and on the radio!!

Here's the link for the festival website; http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/bigweekend/2010/

These guys would be amazing..... and this video is wonderful

Frock Me...

'It took me 3 hours to look this rubbish'; Alexa Chung jokes with US Marie Claire editor Joanna Coles in the return of C4 show 'Frock Me'. Alongside designer Henry Holland and Radio 1 DJ Gemma Cairney, 'Frock Me' gives light to current fashion trends and music. In today's episode the team talked military trends, and Marina & The Diamonds performed her new single... and who knew that there was such a thing as UV sensitive pink lipstick?! Interesting stuff...

Sophie Dahl & Heston Blumenthal...

I find myself falling deeply in love with the TV programme "The Delicious Miss Dahl". Her recipes are fresh and the setting in which she cooks up her ideas is just darling, with bouquets and knick-knacks opportunely placed around the fabulous kitchen. The programme shows on BBC 2 at 8.30pm on Tuesdays; http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00rs7c9

Another fast becoming favourite TV chef of mine in the inventive Heston Blumenthal. In his "Feasts" series, he has been cooking up a storm in the themes of Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, fairy-tales and the Titanic. Next week will show him creating a Gothic horror banquet... I can hardly wait! 'Heston's Feasts' is shown on Channel 4 at 9pm on Tuesdays, straight after The Delicious Miss Dahl'...

A 'Skins' day out...

I woke up at the crack of dawn this morning to take part in the 'Skins' series 5 & 6 open auditions in London. They took place at William Ellis Schools in Highgate, and although the weather was pretty chilly and I was pretty nervous, I met on my travels in the queue some very lovely people, keeping my spirits high through the long 1 1/4 hour wait. The audition its self was nothing special, just a little improvisation work within random groups. With no formal acting experience, I don't particularly think I did very well, although I had an enjoyable time anyway... I'm not exactly expecting a call back! When I finished up, I took a trip round the town, having a browse down some of the vintage shops in Brick Lane and the like. On my way there, I spotted the handsome singer-songwriter Jack Peñate walking into the Whitechapel Art Gallery! That made my day!! I actually came across a bit of trouble with the trains today, so this song is very appropriate...

When Sophie went to shop...

Today I went out with a dear friend of mine for a spot of shopping. When I say a 'spot', I really mean a new season haul. The weather was kind, and the afternoon tea and cake (Victoria sponge, of course) was pleasant. Here are my shopping bag's best bits;

Okay, so purchasing 3 pairs of shoes in one day is a little greedy, but you know what... a girl can never have of them! The grey brogue are from New Look at £25; the laces remind me of whiskers :) The brown lace up boots are from Minx at £29.99; nice and sturdy to mix with little dresses perhaps. And last but not least, the navy lace pumps from H&M at £9.99; cute enough for a light summer's day.

This little skater-style dress is from New Look at £18. It's jersey grey with a dusty pink bow print. I thought this would be a nice addition to my summer wardrobe, although it is still wearable with tights and a cardigan for this mixed April weather. I reckon this would match perfectly with the grey brogues too.

Also from New Look I bought this faux-leather satchel at £15 and this gorgeous floral scarf at £5.
~
Finally, I bought a bunch of accessories to top everything off :) Pearl charm bracelet - Miss Selfridge £8, Pink rose resin bracelet - New Look £5, and Tea Party pendant necklace - Accessorize £6.

Down the Rabbit Hole..

This is a whole new world to me, but I endeavour to start as I mean to go on. This past month has been a busy one, and the sunshine has only just started to frame my days beautifully. Here is a catch-up of my previous couple of weeks;

1... Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland was released, and I went to see it on the night it came out with a group of friends... a brilliant adaptation of Lewis Carroll's masterpiece, I must say.

2... I visited Selfridges to take a peek at the Alice In Wonderland window displays and WonderRoom shop. The windows were charmingly dressed as an array of tea parties, and featured Johnny Depp's original costume for the film, designed by the talented Colleen Atwood. Inside the WonderRoom was showcased Wonderland themed hat designs by Philip Treacy, who is the creator of some of Lady Gaga's avant garde head-wear. Whilst there, I bought an adorable 'Mad-Tea Party' brooch from 'buddug.com'

3... Mother's Day, and I took another trip to London town with my family to Claridge's Hotel for afternoon tea... my first time and it was delightful! I also spotted a number of famous faces there too!

4... I visited my favourite museum, the V&A, to see their current major exhibition 'Quilts 1700- 2010', featuring a Tracey Emin work, who is one of my favourite artists! The exhibit is on until 4th July 2010. I also took a look around at their fashion and textiles displays, noticing a recent acquisition of an Alexander McQueen piece from his 2010 collection. On the way home I took a de-tour to Harrod's who also have an Alice In Wonderland collection of window displays.

... It really seems as though my March and April have been designated to all things 'Wonderland'! I will post all other pictures up in a post tomorrow x
